Our instructors do a lot of work with children in the public school system, with Boy Scouts of America, and with the Bryant Pond 4H Camp & Learning Center (formerly the Maine Conservation School), as well as, with various after school programs. Though our focus has been with adults we will be bringing more children & parent programs to MPSS in the future.
Prerequisites: None
Do you and your child feel comfortable in the woods? Could you or your child spend a night out alone if you lost your way? Or just for fun? In this survival skills class designed for children and their parents we will learn and try out some simple techniques to stay warm and safe in the woods. We will start gaining a feeling of familiarity with the outdoors that will help to keep kids from loosing their way in the first place while keeping fear manageable if something does go wrong. Next comes discussion of the importance of staying hydrated, informing trusted adults of ones location, recognizing when to stay put and wait for help and how to keep warm and dry. Every child will leave with an “outdoor emergency kit” containing some common, easily replaceable items to help attract searchers and keep exposure at bay in the forest.

Primitive Skills Day Camp is NOT your average nature program. If you want your kids to have adventures, learn through hands on activities, and explore the world of native tracking and skills then send them our way. Our staff has over twenty years of experience teaching children in the classroom and outdoors. Each day will start with a lesson about how to appreciate nature and end with a native story designed to wrap up what they learned. At the end of the week your child will have greater knowledge of their backyard to include the trees, birds, mammals, plants, even the weather to come. Please pack a lunch, spare clothes, and shoes for your child. Parents are encouraged to participate. 9am to 3pm daily.
Location: Augusta
Cost: $180
