Friction Fire: Hand Drill + Bow Drill
December 15 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Learn the ancient friction fire method of the Hand Drill which has been used by humans for tens of thousands of years to bring fourth fire. In this course we will demonstrate the technique for starting a fire using this technology. From materials selection to proper technique(s) and troubleshooting you will increase you skill level with this friction fire technique. If time permits we will progress to practicing another friction fire technique known as Bow Drill which is a more complicated, but often times more effective method to execute especially here in the moisture rich Maine Woods. We will get into materials selection and demonstrate and practice several techniques for creating a coal with bow drill
While the ultimate goal will be to get your kit completely from the local environment, we find it most constructive to work each students “edge” to achieve the most progress in each persons learning journey. If this is your first attempt at friction fire we may focus more on the technique and less on procuring every part of it from the land. If you have made several fires before we will help you try out new materials and refine your technique. Whatever your experience level, making fire is always fun so we hope to see you around the campfire soon.
Time: 10am – 3pm
Limit: 12 Students
